Fresh off an international tour, synth-pop act Parallels and producer SLACKMACHINE bring you something glorious to inject some kinesis into your Thanksgiving weekend. If you don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, no worries. This SLACKMACHINE remix of Parallels’ “Hand With Care” will still propel your body to move with its deft reinterpretation of one of the best songs off Parallels’ most-recent album, SUPERSYMMETRY. It releases Friday, but Vehlinggo is giving you a head start. Dive in and be free.
Long Beach, California-based synthwave/Italo Disco/techno/Hi-NRG artist SLACKMACHINE (AKA Brad A. Kinnan) is not only a Parallels affiliate; he’s also a fan and “Handle With Care” was a song on Parallels’ 2021 album, SUPERSYMMETRY, that really stood out to him.
“The dance floor was calling since I first heard it, so I wanted to put a bigger beat behind this great song,” he told Vehlinggo. “Something akin to Palms Trx, Krystal Klear, Amtrac, and old favorite Todd Terje. Luckily, [frontwoman Holly Dodson] was open to the idea, so we made it happen.”
Thinking back to the creation of the original song, Dodson says the number basically “wrote itself.”
“I feel like I maybe ‘channeled’ more so than ‘wrote’ the lyrics. As we do, of course,” she told Vehlinggo. “It was during the pandemic and definitely a strange time, but I always try to find the hope in a situation. If we‘re lucky enough to be re-birthed into a new world after this, let’s handle the future with care. My production on the record was intentionally more sci-fi, so I loved that SLACKMACHINE made it dance floor-ready.”
Get it via Bandcamp and streaming on Friday, Nov. 24. You can also pre-order it via that Bandcamp link right now.
Kinnan’s SLACKMACHINE project began as a moniker he used when performing at nightclubs around LA. He’s released an EP, Vision of Tomorrow, and recently toured with Parallels. Kinnan also is founder of LA-based production house DYNMC Creative, which has created some compelling music videos for synthwave acts Ollie Wride and Betamaxx, along with work such as the Huluween short, Thirst.
Dodson formed Parallels in Toronto in the late 2000s and has been its main member and frontwoman ever since, serving as a pioneer in synthwave and bringing her dreamy, energetic numbers to the world beyond that genre. (I’ve interviewed Dodson on the erstwhile Vehlinggo Podcast, but that file is sadly lost in the sands of time. There’s plenty of other Parallels coverage in the archives, if you’re interested.)
