The track “Malibu Burns” by Secret Flowers, a talented four-piece band out of Los Angeles, CA, has two immediate strong points. One undeniable asset is the vocal interplay between Michael Henry, who plays guitar, and drummer Jacquelyn Sky. Henry has this sort of blase, laid-back vocal delivery, which is counterbalanced well by Sky with her very sweet, innocent, and feminine singing that gives the song a vibe reminiscent of Mazzy Star. The other is how the rest of the band, including David Greening (guitar) and Abraham Rodriguez-Smith (bass), blissfully jam out with unbridled abandon within various soundscapes. These elements include genres such as dream pop, neopsych, and shoegaze. Despite the severe nature of the lyrics, Secret Flowers has managed to create an inviting and engaging single. The song itself was inspired by the tragic, devastating, and rampant California fires that have taken place over the past few years. It slowly grows on the listener with repeated listens, just like “Malibu Burns” seems as if it was stylistically meant to do.
