March 15th was the third of the last stops of their North American part of the God Games tour which continues internationally starting in May. The Kills formed in 2001 and has six albums under their belt so far including last year’s which shares the same name as their current tour.
I got booked for the show a couple of hours before showtime and I arrived 15 minutes before they went up. Not knowing who they were myself I took the opportunity to shoot new and unfamiliar music. There was still a long line outside the theater when I arrived and I was only permitted for the first three songs not only for the ramp but the whole house as well so my time was limited.
The show starts and members Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince, aka VV and Hotel, take center stage in a red-lit scene. Jamie looks like he’s feeling in the moment with his guitar and Alison gives a literal song and dance act. The moves she makes with her body remind me of PJ Harvey. My favorite song of the night would have to be “My Girls, My Girls” which included a trio of backup singers in the background. I would have loved to get a shot of them but unfortunately, it was past my three-song limit.
The show was cool, moody and alluring. Not too crazy yet very energetic. It’s what I consider a date night band. The kind of show you want to take your guy or girl with and dance to the tracks of the 20-plus-year veterans.
